Louis E. Splaingard
Longtime Collinsville resident Louis Eugene Splaingard, 85, died Saturday December 25, 2010 at
Anderson Hospital in Maryville after a six-month battle with stomach cancer.
He was born May 8, 1925, in Frontenac, Kan., to Louis Rene and Prudence
Splaingard, and moved to Collinsville with his family when he was 10 months old.
He attended Webster School and graduated from Collinsville High School in 1943.
Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radioman 2nd
class on the USS Moale, a destroyer, in the Battle of Ormoc Bay. He received the
American Defense and World War II Victory ribbons and won five battle stars,
four for service in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and one for the Philippine
Upon his return to Collinsville, he joined Western Electric and later
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. He retired from Illinois Bell in 1983 after 36
years as a telephone installer and repairman for the Bell System.
He married Rose Mary Merlo on June 17, 1950, and they shared more than 50 years
together, until her death in 2001.
He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Telephone Pioneers,
Collinsville VFW Post 5691 and the Veterans of Ormoc Bay Association.
He is survived by four sons, Mark, of Columbus, Ohio, and wife Debbie; Randy, of
North Plainfield, N.J.; Kent, of Edwardsville, and wife Kathy, and Scott, of
Collinsville, and wife Karen; one daughter, Diane (DeDe), of Collinsville; a sister,
Angelle Pisetta, of Collinsville; a brother, Clement, of Georgetown, Texas, and
wife Delores; five grandsons, David, of Jackson, Miss.; and wife Anna; Daniel,
of Chicago; Andrew, of Oklahoma City, and Zachary and Benjamin, both of
Edwardsville; a granddaughter, Sarah Schofield, of Collinsville; two
great-grandchildren, Sophia and Ezra, of Jackson, Miss.; a brother-in-law, Babe
Merlo, of Collinsville, and wife Betty; a sister-in-law, Frances Merlo, of
Collinsville, and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Collinsville 4PM until 8PM Thursday December 30, 2010, and from 9AM until 10:30AM Friday. Prayer Services will be 4PM Thursday evening. Funeral Mass will be 10:30AM Friday December 31, 2010 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, with Father John Beveridge Officiating, burial in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
