Lora Lee Bingham
Lora Lee nee Pearson Bingham, age 80 of Collinsville, IL, born December 21, 1937 in East St. Louis, IL, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, IL.
Lora Lee graduated as Salutatorian of her Collinsville High School graduating class of 1955. She went on to graduate from Illinois State Normal University in 1959 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education and began her teaching career in Zion, IL, as a junior high band and chorus teacher. In 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Bingham, who was stationed and instructing at Great Lakes Naval Base. Upon their return to Collinsville in 1966, she wrote for the Collinsville Herald, and later returned to her love of teaching music as a traveling elementary grade school music teacher for Collinsville Unit 10. For a brief time, Lora Lee also served as the Junior High Band Director before reinventing herself and began teaching “personal computer” classes and BASIC programming in the early 1980’s for the gifted student program in Unit 10, again traveling to numerous schools. Ultimately, she retired from the O’Fallon, Illinois school district after teaching both in the gifted and classroom setting. As a life-long learner, she was tireless and creative.
Lora Lee was a member of First Baptist Church of Collinsville, where she served in various capacities over the years and at one time also served as choir director. She enjoyed playing the steel guitar, piano and clarinet and had numerous hobbies including cake-decorating, oil painting, and participating in 5k run/walks. Her children affectionately called her “The Great Mombo.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester Lee and Clara nee Stratton Pearson.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Thomas Bingham, whom she married October 22, 1960; a son, Brian Bingham; a daughter, Carin Dehmer; two granddaughters: Abigail and Emilee; and two sisters: Judy Holeman and Sandy (Jim) Wilson.
Visitation will be 4pm to 8pm on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, Maryville, IL.
Funeral service will be at 11am on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Collinsville, 723 St. Louis Road, Collinsville, IL with Rev. Greg Pratt officiating. Mausoleum entombment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Glen Carbon, IL.
Memorials may be made to the Peithman Music Scholarship and will be received at the funeral home.
