John Albert Connors

John A. “Jack” Connors, age 89, of Maryville, IL, born May 31, 1927 in St. Louis, MO, passed into God’s hands on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, surrounded by the love of his family.

John was a military veteran, having served in the Navy aboard the USS Salisbury Sound during World War II, and he was later recalled to duty during the Korean War. He retired after 35 years of employment with Missouri-Pacific Railroad. He was a member of Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville, where he volunteered as a Eucharist minister, altar server, and usher. He was a member of American Legion Post 365 in Collinsville, IL; was exemplified as a Faithful Navigator by the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly #203; donated his time to help the less fortunate by working with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul; and was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1712. His volunteer work with the KC fish fry, KC bingo games, KC blood drives, Special Olympics, and numerous other events earned him an induction into the Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame in 2007. John enjoyed photography, reading, meeting new people, and traveling. His favorite trip was to Ireland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Rosemary (nee Genetti) Connors, and an infant son, Michael Connors.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanne Marie (nee Rausch) Connors, whom he married on April 25, 1953 in Burlington, WI; five children: Ellen Douglas, Kathleen Taylor, Stephen Connors, Rosanne (Ken) Holley, and Mary (Bob) Petz; five grandchildren: Stephanie (Greg) Amsler, Lindsey (Ian) Basile, Amanda (Alex) Leuty, Ashley Gaston, and Tori Connors; and soon-to-arrive great-grandson, Killian Rhys Basile. He is also survived by his brother, Dick (Lois) Connors of FL; his sister, Anne (Wally) Haller of CA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Visitation will be on Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL. Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will stand guard from 6 to 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville, with Father Joseph Havrilka, Celebrant. Burial will be in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Collinsville, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the form of masses at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, or contributrions may be made to Collinsville Knights of Columbus #1712 or to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and will be accepted at the funeral home.
