George E. Workman
George E. Workman, age 88 of Troy, IL, born November 3, 1925 in Chicago, IL passed away at 6:24 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, IL.
George retired after 41 years of service as a plasterer in construction. Upon retiring, he worked for Ace Hardware for 13 years. He was a WWII Navy Veteran and received the American Area Ribbon, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon 5 Stars and Phillipine Liberation 2 stars. George loved to attend his WWII Reunions in Sioux Falls, SD. He was a member of the Troy VFW Post 976. George was an avid Cardinals fan, and enjoyed going to his grandkids’ sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Helen nee Knolls Workman.
George is survived by his wife, Linda nee McGhee Workman, whom he married on May 8, 1969; two sons: Dale (Leah) Workman of Paducah, KY and Charles (Justina) Workman of Hagerstown, MD; a daughter, Kathy (Eric) Stopka of Glen Carbon, IL; 10 grandchildren: Misty, Jeremy, Shea, Harper, Thomas, Zachary, Ally, Matthew, Ryan and Brandon; two great grandchildren: Katelyn and Ayden; a brother, Robert (Marge) Workman of Chicago, IL; a sister, Dorothy Brouder of Mt. Prospect, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 4pm to 8 pm on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 North Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
Funeral service will be at 9:30 am on Monday, October 20, 2014 at the funeral home with Fr. Dan Bergbower officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO with full military honors.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern IL and will be accepted at the funeral home.
