Carole A. Smith

Carole Ann Smith, nee Reid, 73, of Cape Coral, FL, formerly of Collinsville and Maryville, IL, peacefully entered into her eternal rest on March 19, 2014 at her daughter’s residence in Livermore, California, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Carole was born in East Saint Louis, IL on September 11, 1940, the seventh of eleven children born to Earl and Margaret, nee Clancy, Reid.  She was a graduate of Saint Teresa’s Academy.  She married Matthew H. Smith on January 20, 1962.  She worked for Witte Hardware Corporation as a Household Buyer for 25 years.  Carole was fun loving, lived life to its fullest, and no one knew what she would do next.  She loved to dance, knit, and crochet, and was always making special gifts to share with her family and friends.  She also loved spending time with all of her family at “the Country”, Perryville, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, Patricia and Kathleen Reid and Earleen Layton, and a grandson, Nathan Miller. 

She is survived by her children, Colleen (Dagui) Fernandez of Livermore, CA, Doug (Cheryl) Smith of Collinsville, IL, and Matthew (April) Smith II of Godfrey, IL; four sisters, Rose (Lou) Henderson of Collinsville, IL, Mary Catherine “Mickey” Descher of Cahokia, IL, Dorothy Janice “Dot” (Wes) LaVitte of Perryville, MO, and Geraldine “Gerri” (Mike) Kee of Troy, IL; three brothers, Donald (Mathilda) Reid of Winamac, IN, Bernard (Loretta) Reid of Belleville, IL, and Earl “Sonny” Reid of Caseyville, IL; eight grandchildren, Dulce Fernandez of Union City, CA, Meagan Miller of Livermore, CA, Joe Fernandez of Livermore, CA, Zach Miller of Carlyle, IL, Reid Smith of Collinsville, IL, Bianca Fernandez of Livermore, CA, Lauren Smith of Collinsville, IL, and Peyton Smith of Collinsville, IL; one great grandson, Christian Sanchez of Union City, CA; 29 nieces and nephews, 38 great nieces and nephews, and 21 great great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, March 28, 2014 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home, 2800 North Center Street, Maryville, IL.

Funeral mass will be at 10am on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 200 N. Lange, Maryville, IL with Father Jeff Holtman celebrant.  Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Belleville, IL.
