Herman Compton, age 75 of Glen Carbon, IL formerly of Collinsville, IL born August 19, 1938 in Belleville, IL passed away at 3:02 am on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his residence, one month after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
He retired as a salesman after 34 years of service with Liese Lumber Company in Belleville, IL. Herman was a member of St. John’s Evangelical United Church of Christ of Collinsville, IL and ushered for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing games with friends, and enjoyed going to Texas and Alabama in the winter months with his wife, Joan. He had quite a sense of humor and never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aldren R. and Adele S. nee Landwehrmeier Compton.
He is survived by his wife, Joan A. nee Kluge Compton, whom he married May 16, 1959; three daughters: Tana (Mike) Murphy of Greensboro, NC; Pam (Rick) Kennedy of Farmington, MO; Debbie (Rich) Wrigley of Tahlequah, OK; sixteen grandchildren: Adam (Liz), Luke, Chelsey, Haley (Bryce), Hannah, Jacob (Haley), Grace, Isaac (April), Abigail, Lily, Seppi, Elijah, Fiona, Tony, Francesca, and Ian; five great grandchildren: Landon, Mason, Brooke, Brayden, and Alaina; aunt Evie Foster of Collinsville, IL; brother in law Bill Kluge of Belleville, IL; other family and many friends.
Memorial visitation will be from 9am to 11am on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. John Evangelical United Church of Christ, 307 West Clay Street, Collinsville, IL.
Celebration of Life service will be at 11am Saturday at the church with Rev. Tony Minear officiating. It was Herman’s wish to donate his body to science.
